What Is The Lithium Polymer Battery Swelling

Because of thinness design , flexibility and high energy density of lithium polymer batteries ,lithium polymer batteries have been widely used in many portable electronic devices.However,do you know lithium polymer battery will occur battery swelling? What is lithium polymer battery swelling ?It is a potential failure mode that may affect its performance and even the safety of the lithium polymer batteries.

Simply speaking , due to a series of chemical reactions and physical changes occurring inside. The volume of the lithium polymer batteries increased during the charging and discharging process. Why do lithium polymer batteries swell?This swelling is usually caused by the following reasons:

1.Workmanship issue : Uneven Uneven electrode coatings or rough workmanship ,such as battery surface damage,poor encapsulation and so much .

2.Short circuit reactions : When a short circuit occurs inside the battery, there will be generated massive amounts of heat ,causing the decomposition and vaporization of the electrolyte and resulting in battery swelling.

3.Long term storage : If lithium polymer batteries are stored for a long time, will absorb the moisture in the air which may expand the volume of the lithium polymer batteries.

4.Charge issue : Using inferior chargers or the parameter setting for charger is not right ; Over-discharge or discharge at high temperature would cause battery swelling .

It is strong recommended to stop using it immediately and check the battery condition or replace a good lithium polymer  battery to avoid potential risk.
