18650 battery and 26650 battery are common types of cylindrical lithium battery and are mostly used in ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate power batteries. Some people also say that the 26650 lithium battery is an upgraded version of the 18650 lithium battery. In terms of appearance, the 26650 lithium battery is thicker and more rounded. So what are the essential differences between them? There are mainly the following differences between 18650 battery and 26650 battery :

Dimension:

18650 Battery:  Diameter of 18 mm and length of 65 mm

26650 Battery:  Diameter of 26 mm and length of 65 mm

Voltage

18650 Battery: The nominal voltage of single 18650cell is generally 3.6V, 3.7V, the full voltage is 4.2v.

26650 Battery: The nominal voltage of single 26650 cell is generally 3.2V, the full voltage is 3.6v. But if material of 26650 cell  is ternary lithium,the nominal voltage is 3.7v .

Capacity

18650 Battery: The common capacity ranges from 1000 mAh to 3500 mAh. For example, there are models like 2200 mAh and 2600 mAh.

26650 Battery: The capacity is generally around 3000 mAh to 6000 mAh, such as 4500 mAh. Under the same battery material conditions, its capacity is much larger than that of the 18650 battery.

Weight

18650 Battery : About 40~47g

26650 Battery : About 80~94g

Weight difference is depending on the manufacturer, capacity, internal structure and manufacturing quality.

Cycle Life

18650 Battery: The cycle life can reach more than 500 times under normal use. But the actual battery lifespan will be difference as it is depend on factors such as the use environment and charging and discharging conditions.

26650 Battery: Generally, the cycle performance of 26650 battery can reach 2000 times. However, if under the conditions of 1C charging / 1C discharging, with a capacity retention rate of ≥80% and 100% depth of discharge (DOD), the cycle performance just have round 500 times. Simply speaking, appropriate use conditions will extend its cycle life .

Application

18650 Battery: Due to its small size and light weight, it is widely used in various small portable electronic devices, such as laptop batteries, high-end flashlights, portable power tools, wireless data transmission devices, electric heated clothing, shoes and portable instruments and meters, portable lighting, portable printers, etc. In addition, it is also applied in fields such as electric bicycles and power lithium-ion battery packs.

26650 Battery: Because of its large capacity and other characteristics, it is mainly used in situations where high battery capacity and output current are required, such as in integrated lithium-ion battery packs for solar street lights, energy storage stations, solar energy storage batteries, as well as in some power tools, toys, instruments and meters, UPS backup power supplies, communication devices, medical devices and military lamps, etc.
